How To Save Information On A Diskette

If you haven't started burning CD's or using the handy service that St. Francis now offers us to store our files, you may still be using diskettes. You wouldn’t think it, but saving information on a diskette is a little harder than you know. This information is particularly aimed at thesis students. It is very odd how on the day your thesis is due, it’s the day that everything goes wrong. Since one of the major ways we save our information is on diskette, here are a few guidelines as to how to save:

1.      Use diskette brands you can trust: Sony and Imation are popular, reliable, easily available and not expensive.

2.      Don’t buy 1 or 2 diskettes. Invest in a whole box!

3.      NEVER save on an old diskette (especially if the information is valuable – like your thesis). “Old” diskettes are any that you have used before for other information, one that belongs to someone else, diskettes used for over 3 months or one you picked up somewhere and don’t know what’s been on it or to whom it belonged. These discs may have viruses on them as well.

4.      NEVER save on discs that look damaged. Damaged discs are those where the metal has been lifted, bent or broken, the disc itself is split to the sides. Really, anything that looks out of place.

5.      I’m sure that many of you have come across computer messages that ask/suggest/command you to format your disc at some point. Sony and Imation diskettes are pre-formatted. But, it’s always best to make sure prior to saving anything. Sometimes, long after using your disc that message comes up. Note that if you do this all that is saved will be lost. So format if necessary, before you save. To do this:

§        Put disc into the drive

§        Double-click on the “My Computer” icon

§        Right-click on “3.5 floppy (A)”

§        Click on “Format”

§        Check “Quick Format”

6.      Save your thesis on diskette, on your hard drive, make a hardcopy ever so often and save a copy in your e-mail account (preferably a web-based account like Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL etc. that is accessible from anywhere.) If you have more than one account, by all means save it to each of them. E-mail a copy to each of your accounts and clearly label the e-mail.

Additionally, label your disc clearly, don’t leave it lying around in unsecured places, and never leave it in the drive when you are restarting or shutting down your PC.
