St. Francis College

St. Francis College is a private, independent, liberal arts institution in Brooklyn Heights, New York City. It was originally named St. Francis Academy and was founded in 1858 by Franciscan Brothers. Its mission was primarily to educate the boys of the Brooklyn diocese. In 1884 the Trustees of the School received permission to “establish a literary College” and in 1885 confirmed it’s 1st Bachelor’s of Arts degree.

Since then, the school has grown in physical size as well as in enrollment. It now has five buildings (with major renovations being undertaken to modernize the campus including the gymnasium, library and IT center), co-educational, approximately 2500 students attend and they come from all walks of life and different backgrounds. Many students are from right here in New York City, other US states and from a variety of other countries including: Hungary, Russia, Pakistan, Bulgaria, Trinidad and Tobago, Israel, Jamaica and the list goes on. St. Francis currently offers an honors program, a wide variety of majors in liberal arts and pre-professional programs.

Our patron saint is of course St. Francis of Assisi, the patron of animals, merchants and ecology. Francis called for simplicity of life, poverty, and humility before God. He worked to care for the poor, and one of his first actions after his conversion was to care for lepers. Francis practiced true equality by showing honor, respect, and love to every person whether they were beggar or pope. He really felt that nature, all God's creations, were part of his brotherhood. The sparrow was as much his brother as the pope. It is this Franciscan Spirit that permeates all of this little college.
